| Welcome to Jeff and Stacey's website |
10/12/08
So, I REALLY have to update this top block more often. What's been going on...since the summer (the last time I wrote) we have finished our Long Trail thru-hike (which was less than stellar, on account of so much rain), built trench drains on either side of the garage, Jeff traveled to Texas for work, we paddled and camped at Lake Umbagog, survived the Goffstown floods of '08, and I started a new school year!
WHEW! It's been busy and fun, as always, and we are REALLY looking forward to a great winter of skiing and snowshoeing. Bring on the snow days!
Check out any and all pictures below.
Happy trails for now!
Love, Stacey & Jeff |

Beach Ride 5-31-2009 |

After celebrating Jack's 4th birthday, we headed up to the beach for the evening. We woke up bright and early to a sunny, warm morning and rode to the Friendly toast, for the BEST almond Joy pancakes ever, and then on to Kittery to peruse the new and improved trading post. On the way back we had a vicious headwind, but made it back to the house before the rain started...by two minutes!

Hiking at Mt. Hale, Memorial Day weekend! We started in the rain, and wound up in the sun! A mellow hike, lots of winds, average views, and a great day! Pictures here.

We had been to the Grand Canyon North Rim a few years ago, on as side trip from mountain biking in Moab, and it was breathtaking. It was then and there that we decided we would absolutely come back and hike to the river some day! We pulled into the park on Sunday, applied for permit and were lucky to get number 12! On Monday we got our backcountry permit to do an overnight trip into the canyon, and we did a dayhike down the South Kaibab trail to Cedar Ridge to test out the conditions. Tuesday morning we were on the South Kaibab trial for 7 miles of downhill mule-dodging. We met another couple hiking to the Tip-off that were from Portsmouth, so that was a great connection to home! We got to Bright Angel campground at the Colorado River, and were shocked at (1) how cold the water was, and (2) that we could buy ice cold lemonade from the Phantom Ranch Canteena, and (3) that the campsite had running water and flush toilets? LUXURY :) We went to a ranger talk that night and learned some fascinating facts about the canyon, the wildlife, and the hikers and campers that come there.
Wednesday morning we hiked 4.5 miles in record time up (dodging mules, and mule poop) to Indian Garden, in the blazing hot sun, set up camp, and then hiked out in more blazing sun to Plateau Point, which was a spectacular 360 degree of the canyon. After lunch on Plateau Point, we hiked back to the cool respite of the shady campsite at Indian garden.
Thursday we were up early enough to beat most of the intense sun and heat, and dodging mules again, were out of the canyon and back to the South Rim by 10:00. I got a fantastic compliment from an old Indian woman who told me, sweaty, 3 days unshowered, and sucking water from my camelback, that I was "radiant, strong and beautiful!" Can't ask for more than that. Great trip! I love vacation!

Mt. Garfield 3-14-2009 |

Spring is here! Well, sort of. It's in the southern part of the state, anyway. But with temps in the high 40s, it FELT like Spring on Mt. Garfield yesterday. With the road closed for snow, and other reasons, (namely, there were sections when there WAS no road) we had a mile long hike in on the firm snow to the trailhead. The first 1/4 mile was ice, but after that it was great hiking..didn't even need the snow shoes because the snow was so packed. The sky was clear, the scenery was fantastic, and the company was excellent. Top the very LONG day...12 miles with only 1 blister among 8 feet, with corned beef and cabbage by the lake, and you've got an excellent Saturday. Pictures here. GPS track here |

Skiing on Mt. Cardigan 3/1/2009 |

The best thing about backcountry skiing is the price...FREE! The Alexandria trail was crusty and bumpy, but the skiing was fun, and the Kimball trail (supposedly rated as a "moderate" trail...)was decidedly MORE DIFFICULT than moderate, but the snow was powdery and the turns were fun!

Nana-ma-coo-chuck? Nan-ma-co-co-chuck? Na-na-coo-ca-mum-muck? We spent Sunday playing in the snow, and cross country skiing at the Na-na-mo-co-muck trails in Albany, NH, alongside the Swift river. After crossing the beautiful covered bridge, we spent a great day on the trails, had lunch at the Rocky Gorge, and wore Remington OUT!
